Andy Farrell Leaves Door Ajar for James Lowe’s 2027 World Cup Return

Ireland coach says overseas move makes immediate selection unlikely but refuses to completely rule out the experienced winger's comeback.

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has admitted James Lowe is unlikely to play for the national team while based in Japan but has stopped short of ruling out a surprise return for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

The 33-year-old winger left Leinster at the end of the 2025-26 season after failing to agree a new contract and is widely expected to join Japanese club Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath.

Farrell remains open to future return

Under current Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) policy, only players representing one of Ireland’s four provinces are eligible for national team selection, with very few exceptions.

However, Farrell suggested the situation could be reviewed in the future.

“We’ve held the line with that for many years, but we’ll see how that plays out over the next 12 months,” Farrell said.

He added that Ireland’s priority remains developing new players rather than relying on overseas-based stars.

Lowe’s departure leaves major void

Lowe has been one of Farrell’s most influential players since making his Ireland debut in 2020 after qualifying through residency.

During his international career, he has earned 45 caps and helped Ireland win two Six Nations titles, including the 2023 Grand Slam.

Farrell admitted he was disappointed to lose the New Zealand-born winger, describing him as a “larger-than-life character” who will be “thoroughly missed.”

Ireland begin life without Lowe

With Lowe unavailable, versatile back Jamie Osborne will start on the left wing for Saturday’s Nations Championship opener against Australia in Sydney.

Ireland are also without injured wingers Tommy O’Brien, Shayne Bolton and Mack Hansen, while Jacob Stockdale remains another option on the flank.

The July campaign against Australia, Japan and New Zealand forms a key part of Ireland’s preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Farrell backs next generation

Despite praising Lowe’s contribution, Farrell believes his departure presents an opportunity for others to establish themselves in the national side.

“Somebody has to step up and take that mantle that James has carried so superbly over the last number of years,” Farrell said.

He also wished Lowe success in the next chapter of his career, thanking him for everything he has contributed to Irish rugby.
