Vadodara: Delhi Capitals registered a crucial five-wicket victory over defending champions Mumbai Indians in a high-intensity match of the Women’s Premier League at the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday night.
Chasing a target of 155, the Capitals got off to a flying start in the Powerplay as openers Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee took full advantage of the field restrictions. The duo laid a solid foundation with aggressive stroke play, putting Mumbai’s bowlers under early pressure.
After Verma’s dismissal, the scoring rate slowed, and Delhi lost Lee to a tight stumping decision. A steady partnership between Jemimah Rodrigues and Laura Wolvaardt kept the chase on track, though boundaries remained hard to come by. Wolvaardt’s unlucky dismissal added some tension, but Rodrigues held her nerve and accelerated in the final overs, scoring a match-winning half-century to guide Delhi home with five wickets in hand.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians managed a competitive total largely due to a superb unbeaten 65 from Nat Sciver-Brunt. However, MI struggled during the Powerplay both with bat and ball. While Vaishnavi Sharma impressed on debut with a tight spell in the middle overs, and Amanjot Kaur provided support, Mumbai’s bowlers leaked too many runs early on, proving costly.
Delhi skipper Jemimah Rodrigues was named Player of the Match for her composed innings. She praised Marizanne Kapp for her impactful Powerplay spell and credited the opening partnership for setting up the chase. Rodrigues also highlighted how experience from players like Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur has helped her grow as a batter and leader.
Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted her side fell around 20 runs short and acknowledged that injuries and unsettled opening combinations have hurt the team this season. She remained optimistic, stating that the team would look to bounce back strongly in the remaining matches.
With this win, Delhi Capitals picked up their second victory of the season and re-entered the playoff race, while Mumbai Indians slumped to their fourth defeat in six matches, leaving their playoff hopes hanging by a thread.
