Bengal cricketer Abhishek Porel, who has represented Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was arrested in Hooghly district after a woman accused him of having a sexual relationship with her on the promise of marriage, police said on Tuesday.
Porel was arrested by Mogra police late Monday night following a court order and is expected to be produced before a court in Chinsurah later on Tuesday, Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh.
“There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today,” Singh said.
Woman Lodges Complaint
According to police sources, a woman medical student from Karnataka filed a complaint against Porel at Mogra police station on June 23.
The complainant alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three-and-a-half years and that the two had planned to get married. She subsequently accused him of having sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage.
Following the complaint, police began an investigation into the allegations.
Police Register Case Under BNS, IT Act
Police have registered a case against Porel under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 69, as well as provisions of the Information Technology Act, police sources said.
Police teams later visited Porel’s residence in Chandannagar several times as part of the investigation but were unable to find him there.
The cricketer was eventually arrested by Mogra police on Monday night following the court’s direction.
Porel’s Cricket Career
Porel is a Bengal cricketer who has featured for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
The wicketkeeper-batter has been part of Bengal’s domestic setup and has also represented Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
Porel and his family have not yet issued a response to the allegations or the arrest. The allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
