Bulawayo : In one of the most talked-about moments of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2026, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has finally addressed the “no handshake” incident that occurred with India at the toss on Saturday.
In the Group B clash at Queens Sports Club, India U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre and Bangladesh vice-captain Zawad Abrar notably did not exchange the customary handshake before play began — a moment that quickly set social media abuzz amid broader India-Bangladesh tensions.
The BCB, in an official press release, made it clear that the lapse was “completely unintentional” and a result of a “momentary lapse in concentration”.
“There was no intent whatsoever to show discourtesy or disregard towards the opposition,” the statement read, adding that the team management has been reminded about upholding the spirit of cricket and respect for opponents at all times.
The board explained that regular skipper Azizul Hakim was unable to attend the toss due to illness, and vice-captain Zawad stepped in at short notice — which the BCB believes contributed to the awkward moment.
The clarification comes against a backdrop of simmering disputes between the two nations in cricketing arenas this season. The BCB stressed its commitment to sportsmanship and said all players have been reminded of their responsibilities both on and off the field.
While the handshake omission was unplanned, the incident highlights how even small gestures can become magnified in international sport — especially between neighbouring rivals.
