England head coach Brendon McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key are set to remain in their roles for now, despite England losing the Ashes series in Australia after defeats in the opening three Tests.
The England and Wales Cricket Board is not inclined to make sweeping changes following the series defeat and is prepared to give the current leadership time to show improvement, according to the organisation.
Backing from the board
McCullum, Key and Test captain Ben Stokes have all indicated they want to continue in their positions. McCullum and Stokes are contracted until after the home Ashes series in 2027, and removing the head coach would also have been complicated by the upcoming T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India starting in February, according to the ECB.
Instead, the focus is expected to shift towards whether the current leadership is willing to adapt its approach and implement changes. How much time they are given remains unclear, with future results likely to determine the pressure on the set-up.
Preparation and culture questioned
Criticism of England’s current regime has centred on team culture, preparation and training methods. Off-field activities during the tour, including time spent playing golf and socialising during a break in Noosa, have also drawn attention.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan said the team had been “loose” on tour and needed to “sharpen up”, speaking on the Test Match Special podcast.
Changes behind the scenes
England reduced their preparation for the Ashes compared with previous tours, playing only one warm-up match before the series. McCullum and Key have since acknowledged mistakes were made in preparation.
The coaching staff has also been slimmed down. Only two full-time assistant coaches were present for the fifth Test, with a bowling consultant brought in on a short-term basis. There has been no specialist fielding coach involved with the team since the start of the home summer.
Adjustments to the coaching set-up remain one possible area of change, if approved by the current management.
Results under scrutiny
Under McCullum, Key and Stokes, England made an immediate impact in 2022 with 10 wins from their first 11 Tests. However, results have declined since, with England facing a potential 14th defeat in their last 28 matches if they lose the final Test.
England have not won a five-Test series against Australia or India, home or away, since 2018.
Vaughan said McCullum must be willing to adapt, adding that England have been entertaining but ultimately judged on trophies, not style, according to Test Match Special.
