Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have emerged as leading contenders to become Manchester United’s caretaker manager until the end of the season, with both former players set for face-to-face talks with the club’s leadership (BBC Sport).
Possibility of joint role
It is not ruled out that Carrick and Solskjaer could work together, given Carrick was a key part of Solskjaer’s coaching staff when he replaced Jose Mourinho in 2018 (BBC Sport).
Interim arrangement for now
Darren Fletcher, currently Manchester United’s under-18s coach, will continue as interim manager until a caretaker is appointed. Fletcher will take charge of his first match on Wednesday, when United visit Burnley in the Premier League (BBC Sport).
Other short-term contenders
Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is also believed to be in contention for the caretaker role (BBC Sport).
Managerial vacancy explained
United are searching for a temporary replacement after Amorim was sacked on Monday following a turbulent 14 months in charge. The club plan to appoint a permanent successor in the summer (BBC Sport).
Players sense flexible solution
One player has suggested the role could be shared by more than one candidate, or that Fletcher could remain in charge until the end of the season if results are positive in the next two matches (BBC Sport).
Past United spells
Solskjaer first took over as caretaker in 2018 following Mourinho’s dismissal and later became permanent manager for three years before leaving in November 2021. Carrick then had a three-game spell as interim boss before departing the club in December 2021 (BBC Sport).
Recent managerial records
Carrick has been out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough last June after two-and-a-half years in charge. Solskjaer was dismissed by Turkish club Besiktas in August (BBC Sport).
Long-term candidates monitored
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Marseille boss Roberto de Zerbi are understood to be early contenders for the permanent role. Asked about the links, Glasner said: “I am Crystal Palace manager and it makes no sense for you to ask me any more questions about it” (BBC Sport).
