In a mid-season shake-up that has surprised fans and analysts alike, Soorma Hockey Club announced on January 4 that they have parted ways with women’s head coach Jude Menezes during the ongoing Women’s Hero Hockey India League 2025-26 campaign in Ranchi.
The decision came “mutually and in the best interests of the team,” according to an official club statement. Despite Soorma’s potent attacking efforts in recent matches, they had struggled to turn dominance into results — a factor that, the club believes, necessitated a change in leadership at this pivotal point in the season.
Struggles and Statistics
Soorma endured a rough start — winless in their first four matches, scoring just one goal in that stretch — and slipped out of contention for a finals berth early.

“The club wishes to place on record its sincere gratitude to Jude for his contribution and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours,” the statement continued, expressing appreciation for Menezes’ efforts during his tenure.
Rani Rampal Takes Over
Stepping into the breach is team mentor and former India captain Rani Rampal, appointed interim head coach for the remainder of the tournament. She will be supported by the existing coaching and support staff as Soorma aim to stabilise their season and build momentum in the closing fixtures.
Rampal’s elevation underscores her leadership stature within the squad and brings a fresh dynamic as the team looks to end the campaign on a high note.
Interestingly, soon after the coaching change, Soorma registered their first win of the season, beating Ranchi Royals 2-1 — a result that kept fans buzzing and offered hope of a late resurgence.
Whether this mid-season reset sparks a turnaround remains to be seen, but Soorma’s bold decision — underpinned by recognised stalwarts like Rampal — makes for one of the most talked-about narratives in this year’s Women’s Hockey India League.
