Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, with Darren Fletcher set to take temporary charge for Wednesday’s Premier League game against Burnley.
Decision taken after internal tensions
The decision comes less than 24 hours after a 1-1 draw with Leeds, following comments from Amorim indicating strained relations with club officials and frustration over his role and influence. Manchester United said the change was made with the club sitting sixth in the Premier League and in the belief it would give the team the best chance of achieving the highest possible league finish.
Short and difficult spell at Old Trafford
Amorim was appointed in November 2024 after Manchester United triggered a release clause worth €11m to Sporting. He won 25 of his 63 matches in charge, making his tenure the shortest for a permanent United manager since 2014. Across all competitions, results and performances failed to show sufficient progress, according to sources at the club.
Tactical disagreements and criticism
Despite indicating his system would evolve, Amorim largely persisted with a three-man defence. Manchester United had invested heavily in attacking players and viewed the long-term tactical direction differently, which became a growing point of friction. Public criticism of players and limited engagement with academy football also caused concern internally.
Coaching staff depart, Fletcher steps in
Amorim’s coaching staff have also left the club. Darren Fletcher, currently involved with Manchester United’s youth setup, will oversee first-team duties in the interim and is expected to face the media ahead of the Burnley match.
Statistical record under Amorim
In Premier League matches, Amorim recorded the lowest win percentage of any permanent Manchester United manager in the competition. The team also posted the club’s worst goals-conceded rate and lowest clean-sheet ratio in the league during his spell (Premier League).
