In a shocking turn of events, defending Premier League champions Liverpool suffered their fourth consecutive league defeat, this time at the hands of Brentford.

The match, held at Gtech Community Stadium, ended with a scoreline of 3-2 in favor of the home team.

Despite a midweek Champions League win against Eintracht Frankfurt, Liverpool’s defensive frailties were exposed once again by Brentford’s relentless attack.

Summary of the contest at Gtech Stadium

Brentford took an early lead in the fifth minute, courtesy of Michael Kayode’s long throw-in that caught Liverpool’s defense off guard. Dango Ouatarra capitalized on Kristoffer Ajer’s flick-on to score.

Despite their shaky start, Liverpool managed to pull one back just before half-time through Milos Kerkez. However, Brentford restored their two-goal cushion when Igor Thiago converted a penalty after VAR confirmed Virgil van Dijk fouled Ouatarra on the line of the penalty area.

Mohamed Salah scored a late goal for the Reds to ignite hope. However, the Bees held on.

Complete team performance

Brentford’s strategy against Liverpool was a complete team performance, with Kayode’s long throw-in being just one part of their success. The home side dominated the game from the first whistle, making struggling Liverpool look second best. Despite a dominant display, Salah’s late goal – his seventh in eight games against Brentford – masked another poor performance from the Reds.

Liverpool are 6th after 9 league games

The loss leaves Liverpool in sixth place, four points adrift of leaders Arsenal. Liverpool own 15 points (W5 L4). Meanwhile, Brentford climbed to 10th position after their impressive fourth win of the season. They own 13 points from 9 matches.

Poor records made by the Reds

As per Opta, Liverpool have now lost as many Premier League games this season as they did in the entirety of last season (4). Meanwhile, they have lost four consecutive league matches for the first time since February 2021, while their previous four defeats came across a run of 47 matches (W32 D11).
