Odisha took another significant step towards strengthening its sports ecosystem with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art 25-metre indoor swimming pool at the Government College of Physical Education (GCPE) campus in Tamando on Monday.
The facility was formally inaugurated by the Minister of Sports and Youth Services, Suryabanshi Suraj, who dedicated the new infrastructure to budding athletes and the public. Built by the Odisha Bridge & Construction Corporation (OBCC) at a cost of ₹11.69 crore, the indoor pool is expected to play a key role in grooming future swimming champions from the state.
Addressing the gathering, the Sports Minister underlined the importance of swimming as a medal-winning discipline at national and international competitions. He said the State Government is committed to expanding swimming infrastructure and has already initiated plans to set up similar facilities in 13 more districts across Odisha.
Following the inauguration, Suryabanshi Suraj also reviewed the ongoing development of the football ground and synthetic athletic track at the campus. The projects are being executed by the Odisha State Police Housing & Welfare Corporation (OPHWC) and are aimed at providing comprehensive training facilities for athletes.
Concluding the programme, the Minister interacted with young sportspersons and encouraged them to aim high, urging them to excel at national and international platforms and bring laurels to Odisha.
