Premier League: Arsenal Stay Top As Villa Shock Chelsea, City Close In
The Premier League title race intensified over the festive weekend as Arsenal stayed top, while Manchester City and Aston Villa kept the pressure firmly on, Liverpool continued their rise, and the battle for Champions League places took a decisive turn.
Arsenal Hold Nerve Against Brighton

Arsenal retained top spot with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Emirates, surviving a late scare despite dominating much of the contest.
Captain Martin Ødegaard opened the scoring after Bukayo Saka intercepted a loose goal-kick, before Arsenal doubled their advantage early in the second half when Georginio Rutter turned Declan Rice’s corner into his own net. Brighton pulled one back through Diego Gomez, but David Raya’s superb late save ensured Mikel Arteta’s side held on.
Watkins Turns The Tide As Villa Stun Chelsea

At half-time, Aston Villa’s title ambitions appeared to be fading at Stamford Bridge, with João Pedro’s finish from a Reece James corner giving Chelsea the lead against a Villa side struggling for rhythm.
The contest flipped in the 59th minute when Unai Emery introduced Ollie Watkins, a surprise omission from the starting XI. Watkins made an instant impact, finishing from a Morgan Rogers through-ball to draw Villa level.
Villa completed the turnaround seven minutes from time as Youri Tielemans delivered an out-swinging corner from the right, and Watkins rose highest to head into the bottom-left corner, sealing a 2-1 comeback victory.
The result lifted Aston Villa into third place, pushed Chelsea out of the top four, and helped Liverpool move up to fourth in the Premier League standings.

Manchester City remained firmly in the title hunt with a 2-1 away win at Nottingham Forest, recording their sixth straight league victory.

After a goalless first half, City struck early in the second period when Tijjani Reijnders finished a slick move orchestrated by Rayan Cherki. Forest responded swiftly through Omari Hutchinson on the counter, but City had the final say in the 83rd minute as Cherki calmly converted from a set-piece situation to seal the win.
Liverpool Continue Upward Trend
Liverpool climbed into fourth with a 2-1 win over Wolves, extending their unbeaten league run.
Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring before Florian Wirtz netted his first Premier League goal for the club, a strike that proved decisive despite a late Wolves reply.
