As the BCCI Junior Selection Committee announced India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, the familiar sense of expectation returned. Five-time champions and perennial favourites, India will once again head into the global junior showpiece with one clear goal — to lift a record sixth U-19 World Cup title.
The tournament, scheduled from January 15 to February 6, will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia, with 16 teams competing for the crown. India, led by Ayush Mhatre will begin their campaign carrying not just talent, but history, depth and a legacy of dominance at this level.

A Legacy to Defend, a Record to Chase
India are already the most successful side in U-19 World Cup history, having lifted the trophy in 2000, 2008, 2012, 2018 and 2022. Under Mhatre’s leadership, the current crop now has a chance to stretch that record further and underline India’s unmatched production line of young cricketers.
Placed in Group A alongside Bangladesh, New Zealand and the USA, the Indian Colts will open their campaign against the USA on January 15 at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, before taking on Bangladesh on January 17 and New Zealand on January 24.
Strength in Talent and Temperament
One of the strongest reasons India are viewed as title contenders is the sheer quality of the squad. The team boasts a blend of technically sound batters, multi-skilled all-rounders and disciplined bowlers who have already shown maturity beyond their years.
Players like Ayush Mhatre, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Vihaan Malhotra, Aaron George, Deepesh Devendran and Kanishk Chouhan have impressed consistently on challenging tours of England and Australia, as well as in the U-19 Asia Cup, standing tall against high-quality opposition. Their ability to absorb pressure and deliver in crunch moments makes this unit particularly formidable.
Domestic and IPL Exposure Adds Edge
Another major factor working in India’s favour is the early exposure to senior and domestic cricket. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre have already featured for Bihar and Mumbai in the domestic circuit and made their IPL debuts for Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, respectively. Such experience brings invaluable lessons in handling expectations, match situations and elite competition — crucial assets in a World Cup environment.
Meanwhile, youngsters like Aaron George, Deepesh Devendran, Vihaan Malhotra and Kanishk Chouhan have been standout performers at the junior level, especially during the Asia Cup.
Overseas Experience Ahead of African Challenge
Conditions in Zimbabwe and Namibia are expected to test adaptability, but this is an area where the Indian squad holds a distinct advantage. Most members of the 15-man squad have already played in overseas conditions — in England, Australia and the UAE — learning to adjust to pace, bounce and unfamiliar surfaces.
The South Africa tour, announced alongside the World Cup squad, is also part of India’s preparation. Both Ayush Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra will miss the tour of South Africa as they continue to recover from injuries. The duo will report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for further management of their injuries and are expected to join the squad directly for the ICC Under-19 World Cup.Meanwhile, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been appointed captain for the South Africa tour .

With a balanced squad, battle-hardened players, exposure to elite cricket and a legacy that inspires confidence, India enter the 2026 U-19 World Cup as genuine favourites. If Ayush Mhatre’s men can convert promise into performance, the Indian tricolour could once again fly highest — this time with a historic sixth U-19 World Cup title.
