Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has made it clear that player departures in the January transfer window will only be allowed if suitable replacements are brought in, as he feels his squad is already stretched.
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and forward Joshua Zirkzee are both seeking more regular football in the second half of the season. Mainoo remains keen on a loan move, while Zirkzee has been linked with a return to Italy. However, Amorim believes reducing numbers would weaken the group, even with several players due back from injury and international duty.
Squad depth concerns
The United boss stressed that numbers remain an issue despite the expected returns of Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo, along with Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui after the Africa Cup of Nations.
“We are short,” Amorim said, adding that letting players go without replacements would be risky, according to BBC Sport.
United will already be without seven senior players for the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle, with Mainoo sidelined by a calf problem and defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire also unavailable.
January plans and financial reality
Amorim has not ruled out signings in January but suggested they must fit a long-term plan rather than act as short-term fixes.
“We are struggling in this moment, but the club has a plan and we are going to stick with the plan,” he said, as reported by BBC Sport.
Financial considerations also play a role. Mainoo, on a relatively low wage, would likely need replacing with a higher-paid signing, raising questions over value for money.
Youth and future vision
With options limited, 18-year-old Jack Fletcher could provide midfield competition for Casemiro, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte over the festive period. Amorim reiterated his belief in youth and patience, insisting Mainoo remains central to United’s future.
“He is going to be the future of Manchester United,” Amorim said, according to BBC Sport, urging the young midfielder to wait for his opportunity.
Amorim also declined to comment on the contract situations of Casemiro and Maguire, both of whom can speak to other clubs from 1 January, as United balance immediate pressures with longer-term planning.
