Travis Kelce, 36, is approaching the end of his 13th NFL season with the Kansas City Chiefs and faces a decision on whether to retire, following a challenging year for the team.
Decision Will ‘Come to You With Time’
Kelce has considered retirement before, particularly after Kansas City missed the play-offs for the first time in 11 years.
According to Jason Kelce via ESPN, “You’ve got to step away from the game for a little bit. Play these three games, enjoy them, and then let it sink in. It’ll come to you with time.”
A first game without quarterback Patrick Mahomes ended in a 26-9 loss to the Tennessee Titans, with Kelce recording just one reception for six yards. Even a win in the final two games would mark Andy Reid’s worst record in 13 seasons.
Why He Opted Against a Farewell Tour
After last season’s Super Bowl defeat to the Eagles, Kelce texted sports analyst Pat McAfee, saying, “I can’t go out like that.”
According to BBC Sport, Kelce has stated, “That’s not me,” referring to the idea of announcing a retirement mid-season for a farewell tour. He plans to decide on his future before the start of free agency on 11 March.
Life After Football and Upcoming Wedding
Kelce has already explored media and entertainment, hosting shows, acting, and executive producing. He and his brother Jason launched the podcast New Heights, and he has made appearances on Saturday Night Live.
According to GQ, Kelce admitted, “My football might have slipped a little bit because I did have a little bit more focus in trying to set myself up,” reflecting on his off-field commitments.
With his wedding to Taylor Swift planned for next summer, Kelce could have new opportunities in film, television, and family life if he retires.
The Air of a Man Saying Goodbye
Kelce remains the team’s leading receiver, though his production has declined over the past two seasons.
According to BBC Sport, he told reporters before the loss to the Titans, “I’d rather keep the focus on this team right now,” while interactions with fans suggested he may be preparing for a farewell.
Kansas City’s remaining games this season, including home fixtures against the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders, could provide Kelce with a final chance to bid a festive farewell on home soil at Arrowhead Stadium.
