TOKYO : In a wrestling final that looked more like a thriller than a routine finale, Akari Fujinami lived up to her reputation as one of Japan’s most dominant athletes — but not without drama. The Paris Olympic champion, competing at her new weight class of 57kg, survived a fierce scare from Himeka Tokuhara to secure a 4–2 victory in the women’s 57kg final at the Emperor’s Cup All-Japan Championships in Tokyo’s Komazawa Gymnasium.
The match had the crowd gasping when Fujinami, who hadn’t tasted defeat since 2017, was nearly pinned early in the bout — an almost unthinkable sight given her historic dominance. Yet the 22-year-old penned her name into the spotlight once again by fighting off the threat and executing a decisive late takedown to clinch the title.
With this win, Fujinami stretched her unbeaten streak to an astonishing 150 straight victories, a testament to her relentless competitiveness and elite skill, even while transitioning from her longtime weight class of 53kg to the more physically demanding 57kg division.
“It was a daily fight to prepare for this tournament,” Fujinami admitted afterward. She also confessed that giving up points reminded her she still has room to grow — a rare moment of vulnerability from a wrestler often viewed as nearly invincible. The Olympic champion even revealed moments of doubt and emotion during the contest, highlighting how meaningful this hard-earned victory truly was.
The Emperor’s Cup, now serving as a qualifying platform for the upcoming Asian Championships, World Championships, and Asian Games, saw intense competition across multiple divisions. Several Olympic medalists were in attendance, and the tournament delivered moments of drama from start to finish.
For Fujinami, this title — her fourth career national crown and first since 2022 — not only extends her incredible streak but also marks a significant milestone in her transition to a heavier weight class as she prepares for future international challenges.
