Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado, once considered one of La Masía’s brightest emerging talents, has seen his prominence diminish significantly under Hansi Flick despite enjoying a breakthrough campaign last season. The 22-year-old played 2447 minutes across 36 matches in the 2024/25 season, delivering one goal and six assists while earning widespread praise for his discipline and consistency. This year, however, Casado has managed just 591 minutes over 13 appearances, with only seven starts and just three full matches completed — a sharp contrast to his previous progress.
Injuries Create Opportunity, But Flick Looks Elsewhere
With key midfielders Pedri and Gavi out for extended periods, many expected Casado to assume a greater role in Flick’s rotation. Instead, the Barça manager has opted for other solutions, even shifting players out of their natural positions. Eric García has featured frequently in midfield, while Andreas Christensen has been used to adjust the team’s structure when needed. Flick has also relied on Dani Olmo in deeper roles, further limiting Casado’s chances. His last start came in the 5 November Champions League draw against Club Brugge, a match after which Flick openly criticized the midfield unit, a moment that may have contributed to Casado’s reduced involvement.
Ongoing Contract Talks Amid Uncertain Sporting Future
Barcelona are still in negotiations to extend Casado’s contract — a deal that could keep him at the club until 2030 — reflecting the board’s long-term admiration for the homegrown midfielder. However, his limited playing time this season raises questions about how central he truly is to Flick’s future plans. With Pedri and Gavi gradually returning to full fitness and alternative tactical options gaining the manager’s trust, Casado faces an uphill battle to reclaim a regular spot in the squad. The coming months will be decisive, as both player and club must consider whether a continued stay at Camp Nou will benefit his development and career trajectory.
