Atlanta : Deadline: San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama achieved a rare defensive milestone on Friday night, recording at least one blocked shot for the 100th consecutive regular-season game during the Spurs’ 126-98 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena. The achievement places Wembanyama among an exclusive group of NBA greats, as he became only the third player in league history to accomplish this streak since blocks were first tracked as an official statistic in 1973-74. Wembanyama led the Spurs in the game with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while adding two blocks against the Hawks. His first block, coming midway through the third quarter on a shot attempt by Hawks guard Dyson Daniels, extended the streak. He later denied a layup by rookie Asa Newell to finish the night with multiple rejections.
The 100-game block streak began early in Wembanyama’s NBA career; his last regular-season game without a block occurred on January 10, 2024, against the Detroit Pistons. Maintaining such consistency over multiple seasons — including through injury interruptions — underscores his extraordinary defensive impact and durability.
Only two other players have recorded longer consecutive block streaks: Patrick Ewing, who logged 145 straight games, and Dikembe Mutombo, whose streak reached 116. Wembanyama’s current run of 100 games ranks him third on the all-time list since the league began officially tracking blocks.
At just 21 years old, Wembanyama has already established himself as one of the NBA’s premier rim protectors. His unique combination of height, extended wingspan and defensive instincts has made him a disruptive force around the basket and a central figure in the Spurs’ defensive identity.
Wembanyama missed 12 games earlier this season due to a calf strain but returned to the lineup on December 13 during the NBA Cup semifinals, contributing 22 points in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Following the Hawks victory, the Spurs improved to 20-7, reaching 20 wins more than a month earlier than they did last season, underscoring the team’s strong start.
This latest accomplishment not only highlights Wembanyama’s individual excellence but also situates him firmly in conversations about the league’s most impactful defensive players. As the season progresses, his streak — still active — could continue to climb the record books in the months ahead.
