Alex Carey produced a memorable Ashes innings while Usman Khawaja marked a dramatic return with a fluent knock as Australia ended the opening day of the third Ashes Test in a strong position against England at the Adelaide Oval.
Carey, the Australian wicketkeeper-batter, brought up his third Test century and his first in The Ashes, guiding Australia past the 300-run mark. His 106 was a study in control and composure, drawing loud applause from the home crowd as he removed his helmet and raised his bat in celebration. Carey’s innings once again underlined his value as Australia’s most consistent Test run-scorer this year, often steadying the side in challenging situations.
Earlier, Usman Khawaja made the most of an unexpected opportunity after being drafted into the XI at the last moment. Initially left out of the side, Khawaja replaced Steve Smith, who was ruled out after experiencing vertigo-like symptoms. The left-hander responded with a classy 82, providing stability at the top after Australia chose to bat.
Australia closed the day on 326/8, with Mitchell Starc unbeaten on 33 and Nathan Lyon yet to score, leaving the lower order to push the total further on day two. For England, Jofra Archer led the bowling effort with a sharp three-wicket haul, while Brydon Carse provided solid support.
