Gerônimo “Mondragon” dos Santos, a respected Brazilian mixed martial artist with a career spanning nearly two decades, has died at the age of 45.
According to local reports, dos Santos went missing over the weekend after entering the Rio Negro near São Gabriel da Cachoeira in Brazil’s Amazonas state. Search and rescue teams later recovered his body following an extensive operation in the challenging river conditions.
Nicknamed “Mondragon,” dos Santos was a seasoned heavyweight who competed in more than 70 professional MMA bouts across various international promotions. He earned a reputation as a powerful striker and durable competitor, facing several notable names during his career.
Dos Santos was briefly associated with the UFC in 2012 but never made an official appearance inside the Octagon after failing to receive medical clearance to compete. Despite that setback, he continued fighting in multiple combat sports organisations, reflecting his enduring commitment to the sport.
Beyond his fighting career, dos Santos was actively involved in public service in his hometown, serving in a role related to public security.
