United States, Canada, Mexico : The global football community has been rocked by outrage this week as Football Supporters Europe (FSE) publicly condemned FIFA’s ticket pricing for the 2026 World Cup as a “monumental betrayal” of the tournament’s loyal supporters.
Soaring Ticket Prices Spark Uproar
FIFA has released details — starting with national football associations’ allocations to their most devoted supporters — revealing that even the cheapest ticket for the World Cup final is priced at approximately 4,185 US dollars (about £3,120).
Fans wishing to follow their national team from the opening match all the way through to the final could face paying around €6,900 (just over £6,000) — nearly five times more than the cost to do the same at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Why Supporters Are Furious
FSE said the pricing regime breaks with World Cup tradition by:
Charging “extortionate” ticket prices for the most dedicated supporters, even before travel and accommodation costs.
Removing the lowest ticket category from the guaranteed allocation for fans through national associations, reserving them instead for general sales subject to dynamic pricing.
Introducing varying ticket costs for group matches based on the supposed attractiveness of fixtures — meaning the price for the same category could differ from game to game.
FSE stated that this undermines the World Cup’s cultural significance and ignores the contribution supporters make to the spectacle of the tournament.
Call to Halt Sales
In a formal statement, FSE demanded that FIFA:
Immediately halt Participating Member Association (PMA) ticket sales.
Consult with all impacted parties.
Review ticket prices and how categories are distributed.
They argue this review should aim to restore fairness, transparency, and respect for fans ahead of the tournament next summer.
What Fans Can Do
FIFA has opened an online window — running until January 13, 2026 — where all supporters can try to order World Cup tickets online at set prices.
But with many fans and associations still waiting for final pricing details for specific matches, the controversy continues to grow as the clock ticks toward what promises to be one of the most talked-about World Cups ever held.
