Bhubaneswar:
Tiebreak Turmoil Decides Semifinals
In a gripping finish to the FIDE World Cup 2025 semifinals, Wei Yi and Javokhir Sindarov claimed their spots in the final after nerve-shredding rapid tiebreaks on November 23 in Goa.
Wei Yi Overcomes Esipenko After Rook Blunder
Wei Yi’s semifinal showdown with Andrey Esipenko was a rollercoaster. After drawing the first rapid game, Esipenko appeared to be on course for victory in the second — but a shocking blunder saw him forget to guard his rook on g2. Wei Yi seized the opportunity, won the exchange, and forced resignation.
Sindarov Clinches Final Spot With Composed Play
On the other side, 19-year-old Javokhir Sindarov defeated his compatriot Nodirbek Yakubboev in the tiebreaks. He won the first rapid game with Black after confident endgame play, then held the second game to secure a 1.5–0.5 victory.
Both Finalists Lock in Candidates Tournament Berths
By reaching the World Cup final, Wei Yi and Sindarov have also guaranteed themselves places in the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament — a critical step toward a shot at the World Championship.
Semifinal Classical Games Had Gone Quietly
Earlier in the weekend, both semifinal matches ended in stalemate during their second classical games. Esipenko and Wei Yi drew their second game in balanced play under fatigue, while Sindarov and Yakubboev also split the point.
What’s Next: Final Clash and Third-Place Battle
The World Cup final between Wei Yi and Sindarov is set to begin soon, with both players vying not only for the title but also potentially for prize money and prestige. Meanwhile, Esipenko and Yakubboev will contest the third-place match — the outcome of which will decide the final qualifying spot for the Candidates Tournament.
