Toronto Raptors secured a commanding 140-110 victory over the Washington Wizards on Friday, marking their sixth consecutive win and making them the first team to clinch a spot in the NBA Cup knockout rounds this season.
Ingram, Barrett Shine in Toronto’s Dominant Win
Brandon Ingram led the charge with 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and two steals, while RJ Barrett matched him with 24 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Scottie Barnes added 23 points, including 18 in the second half, along with five rebounds and three steals. Reserve Sandro Mamukelashvili also made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 23 points and pulling down seven rebounds.
Raptors’ Run of Form Continues
Toronto has been on a remarkable run, winning ten of their last eleven games after a slow start to the season. Their NBA Cup record now stands at a perfect 3-0, and the team clinched first place in East Group A after the Indiana Pacers lost 120-109 to the Cleveland Cavaliers. This marks the first time the Raptors have advanced beyond the NBA Cup group stage.
Wizards’ Struggles Persist
Meanwhile, the visiting Wizards are enduring a rough stretch, suffering their 13th consecutive loss and holding an NBA-worst 1-14 record. Last season, the team tied its franchise record with 16 consecutive losses between November 2024 and January 2025.
West Group A Battles
In West Group A, the Phoenix Suns and Oklahoma City Thunder are tied at the top. Phoenix pulled off a dramatic 114-113 comeback against the Minnesota Timberwolves, with Collin Gillespie scoring the decisive basket after the Suns trailed by eight with just over a minute remaining. Oklahoma City continued its unbeaten run by defeating the Utah Jazz 144-112, overcoming an early 14-point deficit to dominate the final three quarters.
The NBA Cup is a mid-season tournament introduced to add excitement to the regular season, with teams divided into groups and the top performers advancing to knockout rounds. While it offers a trophy and prize money, it is secondary to the main prize. The NBA Championship, on the other hand, is the ultimate goal of the season, awarded to the team that wins the NBA Finals after the playoffs. The championship determines the official NBA titleholder and carries far greater prestige, making it the pinnacle of professional basketball in the league.
