A Football Icon Steps Into Cycling’s Turbulent Spotlight
The professional cycling team formerly known as Israel-Premier Tech has been taken over by NSN, a branding and entertainment company co-founded by Barcelona legend Andrés Iniesta. The new owners have re-registered the squad as Swiss and announced a complete rebrand to NSN Cycling from 2026.
The move comes after months of political pressure, sponsorship withdrawals, and widespread protests targeting the team’s Israeli ownership during the Vuelta a España. Although a sale was strongly implied in Thursday’s announcement, the team’s previous Israeli owners have not formally confirmed the transaction.
Rebranding After Protests and a Sponsor Walkout
The takeover follows the dramatic exit of title sponsor Premier Tech, which severed ties despite the team agreeing to drop “Israel” from its name. The sponsor had faced public pressure after repeated pro-Palestinian demonstrations disrupted the Vuelta, with some protests directly targeting the team convoy and riders.
Canadian star Derek Gee also terminated his contract days before the race, saying riding for the Israeli-owned team “weighed heavily on [his] conscience.” He now faces a €30 million damages claim, though it is unclear how the dispute stands following the ownership change.
A Team in Crisis: Injuries, Politics and Operational Upheaval
The team has weathered a turbulent season. Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome was released last week after a severe training-related injury. Co-owner Sylvan Adams, long vocal in Israeli politics, recently stepped back from daily involvement amid controversy linked to the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Multiple protests during the Vuelta forced neutralisations and, in Madrid, the cancellation of the final stage. Equipment supplier Factor also withdrew support, further destabilising the team’s future.
The NSN Vision: A Fresh Start Under New Leadership
NSN—short for Never Say Never—describes itself as a global sports and entertainment brand aimed at connecting audiences. Iniesta, known for his World Cup-winning goal and illustrious Barcelona career, has become increasingly engaged in business post-retirement and is a keen gravel-cycling enthusiast.
The renewed project arrives at a pivotal moment for professional cycling, as stakeholders push for a more sustainable financial model amid rising global interest in the sport.
With the team expected to take up a UCI WorldTour berth in 2026, NSN Cycling represents both a rebranding exercise and a strategic restart—one shaped by the pressures of politics, sport, and global perception.
