Indian cycling celebrated a historic breakthrough after 19-year-old Harshita Jakhar became the first Indian woman to feature at the prestigious Tour de France Femmes 2026. While she was not part of the elite racing peloton, her participation in the event’s ceremonial Stage 2 programme placed India on one of cycling’s grandest stages for the very first time.

The achievement is more than a personal milestone. It represents a significant step forward for Indian women’s cycling, a discipline that has long struggled for international recognition despite producing talented athletes over the years.

A Landmark Moment for Indian Cycling

Harshita was selected under the UCI World Cycling Talent Programme, an initiative designed to identify and nurture promising riders from developing cycling nations. During the ceremonial start of Stage 2, she led a group of eight young cyclists representing emerging cycling countries, standing alongside riders from Afghanistan, Algeria, Chile, Ethiopia, Namibia and Uganda.

Although the appearance was ceremonial rather than part of the official race classification, the opportunity gave Harshita invaluable exposure at one of the sport’s most celebrated events. The Tour de France Femmes remains the pinnacle of women’s road cycling, attracting the world’s top riders and millions of fans globally.

The Race That Defines Women’s Cycling

The 2026 Tour de France Femmes began in Lausanne, Switzerland, on August 1 and will conclude in Nice, France, on August 9.

Race Highlights

Total Stages: 9

Total Distance: Approximately 1,175 km

Start: Lausanne, Switzerland

Finish: Nice, France

The race features demanding mountain climbs, sprint stages and tactical battles, making it one of the toughest competitions on the women’s cycling calendar.

From Lockdown Hobby to International Recognition

Harshita’s journey is a story of determination and rapid growth. She took up cycling during the COVID-19 lockdown while training on the roads of Patiala. What started as a fitness activity soon transformed into a competitive career as she consistently impressed in national events.

Her rise through Indian cycling has been remarkable.

Career Highlights

First Indian woman to feature at the Tour de France Femmes.

Three-time consecutive national champion.

Selected for the UCI World Cycling Talent Programme.

Represented India at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Kigali.

Finished 39th at the World Championships, gaining valuable experience against elite international riders.

A Bigger Dream Beyond One Historic Appearance

Harshita has made it clear that this achievement is only the beginning. Her immediate target is the 2026 Asian Games, where she hopes to secure a top-10 finish before chasing a podium place in future editions.

India has enjoyed limited success in cycling at the Asian Games, with three silver medals and one bronze medal in its history. Harshita’s emergence offers fresh hope that Indian road cycling can become more competitive at the continental and global levels.

A New Chapter for Indian Women’s Cycling

Indian cycling has often remained in the shadows compared to other Olympic sports. Harshita Jakhar’s appearance at the Tour de France Femmes changes that narrative. Her journey—from training on Indian roads to standing at cycling’s biggest women’s event—demonstrates what can be achieved with talent, opportunity and perseverance.

While the record books will remember her as the first Indian woman to feature at the Tour de France Femmes, her greater contribution could be inspiring a new generation of young girls to believe that the world’s biggest cycling stages are no longer beyond India’s reach.

As Indian sport continues to expand its global footprint, Harshita’s historic achievement stands as another reminder that barriers are meant to be broken—and that every first creates the possibility of many more to follow.
