A Freak Injury Halts Palmer’s Comeback
Chelsea forward Cole Palmer will miss at least another week after an unexpected setback: a fractured small toe caused by stubbing it on a door at home. The injury occurred Wednesday night—just as the England international was preparing to rejoin first-team training following nearly two months out with a groin issue.
The 23-year-old will now be absent for Chelsea’s next three games:
-
Burnley (Premier League)
-
Barcelona (Champions League)
-
Arsenal (Premier League)
“It’s nothing serious, but he won’t be back within the next week,” manager Enzo Maresca confirmed. “It can happen to anyone—I hit my head and legs at night all the time.”
Chelsea Managing Without Their Star Attacker
Palmer has not featured since being forced off early against Manchester United on 20 September. Despite his absence, Chelsea have played 11 games, winning eight and losing two, climbing to third in the Premier League.
Still, Maresca maintains the team is stronger with Palmer on the pitch:
“I feel much better when Cole is on the field… but when he’s not, we must find solutions.”
The Blues will, however, welcome Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Benoît Badiashile back for the trip to Burnley.
Why Palmer’s Recovery Has Stretched On
Palmer has been battling a recurring groin problem, limiting him to just four appearances this season. Chelsea hoped the toe injury would not significantly prolong his return, and the club believes he has already passed the worst of the groin issue.
The upcoming schedule adds pressure: Chelsea face Leeds, Bournemouth and Atalanta in a tight nine-day stretch after the Arsenal match.
During Palmer’s absence, several young talents have stepped up—Estevão Willian, Pedro Neto, Facundo Buonanotte, Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho and João Pedro—keeping Chelsea competitive on multiple fronts.
Football’s Long List of Bizarre Injuries
Palmer joins a notorious list of players sidelined by freak mishaps unrelated to football, including:
-
Dave Beasant cutting a tendon with a falling jar of salad cream
-
Liam Lawrence tripping over his Labrador
-
Rio Ferdinand injuring himself watching TV
-
Rami Kaib breaking his jaw biting a carrot
-
Kirk Broadfoot being burned by an exploding microwaved egg
-
Santiago Cañizares missing the 2002 World Cup after dropping aftershave
These episodes highlight how even elite athletes can be undone by the most ordinary moments.
