Trevoh Chalobah is set to join up with the England squad to replace injured Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The 26-year-old Chelsea defender is expected to link up with the team ahead of England’s final World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Serbia, though an official announcement is yet to be made.
England already through
The Three Lions have already secured qualification for next summer’s World Cup, allowing manager Thomas Tuchel some flexibility in squad selection for the final two group games. Chalobah’s inclusion adds depth to England’s backline, with Guehi ruled out due to a foot injury sustained during Crystal Palace’s recent Conference League win over AZ Alkmaar.
Tuchel’s faith in Chalobah
Chalobah earned his first England call-up under Tuchel in May and made his debut against Senegal. In September, the manager admitted Chalobah was “unfortunate” to miss out on the qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, and he was also not selected for the October internationals. Tuchel has long been a key influence in his development, having handed him his Chelsea debut back in 2021.
Consistent for Chelsea
The versatile defender has featured in all but four matches for Chelsea this season, contributing to the club’s strong run across competitions. The Blues currently sit third in the Premier League, have reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, and remain unbeaten in the league phase of the Champions League.
More changes expected
England’s squad could see further alterations. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe confirmed that winger Anthony Gordon (hip) and goalkeeper Nick Pope (concussion) will both withdraw due to injuries. Their absences may open doors for late inclusions as Tuchel finalises his plans for the upcoming fixtures.
Chalobah’s return to the national setup marks another milestone in his career, following in the footsteps of his brother Nathaniel, with the pair becoming one of England’s few sibling duos to represent the country at senior level.
