Bhubaneswar: Indonesian tennis player Beatrice Gumulya Tjen achieved a career milestone by clinching her maiden WTA 250 title, defeating Australia’s Kimberly Birrell in an intense final on Sunday. The 23-year-old showcased remarkable composure and tactical maturity to secure a straight-sets victory, marking a historic moment for Indonesian tennis.
The final began with both players holding serve confidently, but Tjen’s consistent baseline play and powerful returns gradually tilted the momentum in her favor. Birrell fought hard to stay in the contest, but Tjen’s accuracy and ability to convert key break points proved decisive.
With the win, Tjen not only captures her first WTA singles trophy but also becomes the first Indonesian player in over a decade to lift a WTA title. Her triumph is expected to boost her world ranking and inspire a new generation of tennis talent in the region.
In her post-match remarks, Tjen expressed gratitude to her coaching team and fans, saying, “This is a dream come true. I’ve worked so hard for this moment, and I’m proud to represent Indonesia on the global stage.”
Birrell, who enjoyed a strong tournament run herself, congratulated Tjen on the victory and acknowledged the Indonesian’s tenacity.
With this breakthrough, Tjen has firmly established herself as one of the promising young players to watch on the WTA circuit in the coming seasons
