The qualification rounds for the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) have concluded with reigning champions TUM Autonomous Motorsport from Germany clinching pole position ahead of the Grand Final on November 15, 2025. The top six teams, representing four nations, will now compete in a groundbreaking 24-lap race that promises to redefine the boundaries of artificial intelligence and autonomous mobility.
AI on the Fast Track
A2RL — the world’s most advanced autonomous racing competition — pushes AI systems to their physical and computational limits. Designed by ASPIRE, the innovation acceleration arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), the league is transforming racing into a proving ground for machine intelligence under extreme conditions.
Eleven international teams converged on Yas Marina Circuit for this year’s multi-stage qualification, competing for a share of the US$2.25 million prize pool and a chance to advance AI performance beyond the laboratory.
Machines Match Human Speed
A week of intense qualification saw history made as teams repeatedly broke the one-minute barrier on the North Circuit of Yas Marina.
Italy’s Unimore Racing set an autonomous lap record of 58.87 seconds, beating the human driver benchmark of 59.20 seconds — a symbolic moment in the race toward AI-human parity.
During the Multi-Car Qualification heats, TUM delivered a decisive overtake on Unimore to secure pole position, reinforcing their reputation as the world leaders in driverless performance.
World’s First Six-Car Autonomous Grand Final
The six teams heading to the Grand Final are:
-
TUM Autonomous Motorsport (Germany)
-
Unimore Racing (Italy)
-
Kinetiz (Singapore/UAE)
-
TII Racing (UAE)
-
PoliMOVE (Italy)
-
Constructor University Racing Team (Germany)
They will battle across 24 laps in the largest-ever autonomous multi-car race, while five other teams will compete in the Silver Race time trial.
Adding to the excitement, former Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat will return for the “Human vs AI” showcase — a dramatic test of human instinct versus machine precision.
Pushing the Frontiers of AI
Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, said:
“This season, we’re pushing the boundaries of autonomous racing even further. Machine capabilities are rapidly approaching — and sometimes surpassing — human performance. Unimore’s record lap this week proves just how fast AI is evolving.”
Ayoub Raji, Co-Lead of Unimore Racing, added:
“We’re proud to show that autonomous race cars can perform at human levels. The qualification was intense, but we’re ready to push our software to the limit in pursuit of victory.”
Abu Dhabi Autonomous Week: A Global Innovation Showcase
The 2025 A2RL Grand Final will headline the first-ever Abu Dhabi Autonomous Week (ADAW) — a six-day celebration of innovation bringing together global researchers, engineers, and industry leaders.
The event will feature the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Summit, DRIFTx Exhibition, and RoboCup Asia-Pacific, spotlighting the UAE’s growing role as a global hub for AI and autonomous technologies.
A2RL was envisioned by H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, Adviser to the UAE President and Secretary General of ATRC, and organized by ASPIRE as part of the UAE’s mission to advance frontier research, foster global collaboration, and accelerate real-world AI deployment.
