Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that former captain Steve Smith will lead the Australian Test team if Pat Cummins is unable to recover in time for the Ashes series, which begins on November 21 in Perth.
Cummins, who has been battling a stress fracture in his lower back since July, remains uncertain for the opening Test. While selectors remain hopeful of his recovery, Bailey said that Smith is fully prepared to take over the captaincy if needed.
> “If Pat doesn’t play, Smudge [Smith] will captain,” Bailey stated, reinforcing Australia’s plan to maintain continuity in leadership.
Smith has previously stepped into the role successfully when Cummins was sidelined, most notably during the 2023 tour of India and several home Tests. His experience and proven leadership credentials make him the clear choice to guide the team if the situation demands.
Bailey also mentioned that Cummins continues to be an integral part of the team’s preparation despite his injury. The fast bowler is expected to stay involved in leadership discussions and strategic planning, even if he misses the first match.
“We’re confident Pat will play a major part in the Ashes, but we also have to be realistic about his fitness timeline,” Bailey said.
The selectors and medical staff are closely monitoring Cummins’ progress, ensuring his return is managed carefully to prevent any long-term impact. With the Ashes being one of cricket’s most fiercely contested series, Australia are prioritizing both the captain’s health and the team’s stability.
Whether Cummins returns in time or Smith steps in once more, Australia’s leadership looks well-equipped to handle the intensity of the Ashes battle ahead.
