Nottingham Forest have sacked head coach Ange Postecoglou after just 39 days in charge, bringing a swift end to one of the shortest managerial reigns in Premier League history.
The Australian coach was appointed on September 9 to replace Nuno Espírito Santo, with hopes that his attacking brand of football would rejuvenate the club. However, a string of poor performances and results quickly eroded confidence in his leadership.
Forest’s 3–0 defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground proved to be the final straw. Club owner Evangelos Marinakis was seen leaving the directors’ box during the second half, and a statement confirming Postecoglou’s dismissal was released less than twenty minutes after full-time.
In an official club announcement, Forest said the decision was made “following a series of disappointing results and performances,” thanking Postecoglou for his efforts but insisting that “a change in direction is necessary.”
Postecoglou’s tenure ends with the team winless in eight matches and sitting 17th in the Premier League table, just one place above the relegation zone. The brief spell ranks among the shortest for any permanent manager in league history.
Before the Chelsea game, Postecoglou had defended his work, saying, “The story always ends the same — me with a trophy.” Despite his confidence, the Forest hierarchy decided they could not afford to wait for a turnaround.
The club will now begin its search for a new manager as pressure mounts to steer the team clear of another relegation battle. Postecoglou’s abrupt exit adds yet another chapter to Nottingham Forest’s recent history of managerial instability.
