Bhubaneswar: The highly anticipated Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 match between defending champions Australia and Sri Lanka was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent heavy rain at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The showers delayed the toss and intensified soon after, leading to the match being called off approximately two and a half hours after the scheduled start .
With no play possible, both teams were awarded one point each. Australia now leads the points table with three points, while Sri Lanka opens its account and sits fifth in the standings .
This washout follows contrasting fortunes for both teams in their opening matches. Australia began their title defense with a commanding 89-run victory over New Zealand, highlighted by Ash Gardner’s match-winning century . In contrast, Sri Lanka suffered a 59-run loss to India in their opener, despite a promising start .
Looking ahead, Australia will face Pakistan on October 8 in Colombo, while Sri Lanka will play against England on October 11 after a 10 day break .
