Bhubaneswar: Jon Jones, one of MMA’s greatest, has thrown his weight behind Olympic wrestling gold medalist Gable Steveson, predicting a bright UFC future for the 24-year-old.
Jones, who rarely speaks about mentoring, declared: “It’s not a matter of if he can, it’s a matter of when.” He added that if he ever committed to coaching, it would only be for someone “all in” on greatness — and he believes Steveson fits that bill.
The heavyweight prospect already has an impressive résumé:
Olympic Champion (Tokyo 2020) in freestyle wrestling.
Tried his hand with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills in 2024 but was released.
Transitioned to MMA training in Florida and earned a 98-second victory in his debut fight.
MMA fans are split but intrigued. Early Twitter polls show strong curiosity about Steveson’s potential, with many comparing his path to Daniel Cormier and Brock Lesnar, both elite wrestlers who became UFC champions.
With Jones in his corner, Steveson may have the perfect mentor to fast-track his journey. The UFC’s heavyweight division could soon have a new name to watch — one with Olympic gold already around his neck.
