Indian opener Abhishek Sharma is on the brink of rewriting T20I records as India prepares to face arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final. The left-hander has been in sensational form throughout the tournament and could surpass milestones set by Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Rizwan.
One step away from Kohli’s mark
Abhishek has already amassed 309 runs in six matches at a strike rate of over 200. He needs just 11 runs in the final to break Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs by an Indian in a multi-nation T20I tournament. Kohli had scored 319 runs during the 2014 T20 World Cup, a run that earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
Closing in on Phil Salt’s tally
The 25-year-old is also chasing England’s Phil Salt, who scored 331 runs in a five-match T20I series against West Indies in 2023. Abhishek requires 23 runs to move past Salt and claim the record for the most runs in a T20I tournament by a batter from a Test-playing nation.
Chance to move past Rohit and Rizwan
Consistency has been Abhishek’s biggest strength. With seven consecutive scores of 30-plus, he currently shares the record with Rohit Sharma and Rizwan. A solid knock in the final will put him ahead of the two accomplished openers.
Breakout year in T20Is
In 2025, Abhishek has been India’s standout performer in the shortest format. He has scored 588 runs from 11 innings at an average of 53.45 and a staggering strike rate of 211.51, including a century and four half-centuries. His aggressive starts have given India crucial momentum, and Sunday’s final offers him another chance to underline his rising stature.
