Los Angeles – The Los Angeles Lakers have cemented their commitment to the franchise’s direction by extending the contract of head coach JJ Redick. The surprise announcement was made by President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka at a press conference on Thursday, just before the start of training camp for Redick’s second season.
Details of the Extension
Redick, 41, originally signed a four-year, $32 million contract in June 2024, which secured his position through the 2027-28 season. While the financial and duration terms of the new extension were not immediately disclosed, it signals a significant and early vote of confidence from the Lakers organization.
The Rationale: ‘Confidence and Belief’
Rob Pelinka emphasized that the decision to offer an extension after only one season was a deliberate move to establish long-term stability and culture.
Pelinka stated: “’Confidence and belief.’ We think he’s a special coach with a special voice who’s really helping us define the culture of Lakers excellence. We just wanted to make a clear statement of this is what we believe, this is what we want to lean into… I think having long-term planning is helpful when building team moving forward.”
First-Year Performance
Despite entering his first head-coaching role last season, Redick led the Lakers to a strong 50-32 regular season record, securing the third seed in the highly competitive Western Conference playoffs. The team’s season concluded in a five-game first-round loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Redick’s ability to navigate the league as a debut coach, coupled with the team’s regular-season success, convinced the front office to quickly align on a longer future.
