New Delhi: The Supreme Court has underlined the role of sports in strengthening fraternity across society and cautioned against the concentration of sporting facilities and opportunities within the hands of the urban elite.
Delivering its observations while finalising the constitution of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the Bench noted that sports are not merely a recreational activity but a powerful tool for social integration, collective well-being and nation-building.
Sports As A Community Resource
The Court observed that access to sports facilities, playgrounds and opportunities constitutes an essential community resource that should be made available to all citizens, irrespective of geography or socio-economic status. It emphasised that restricting facilities to urban elites would undermine the spirit of inclusivity.
Revenue Sharing And Accessibility
Highlighting the need for greater equity, the Court suggested that revenues generated from sports events and media rights should be distributed in a manner that promotes grassroots development and ensures affordable access to sporting activities across regions.
Constitutional Duty Of The State
The Bench further reminded the government of its constitutional responsibility to support not only the participation of citizens in sports but also the governance of institutions that oversee them. It noted that effective regulation and distributive measures are essential for making sports a truly national movement.
With its strong message, the Supreme Court has reiterated that sports must not become an exclusive privilege but remain a shared national asset that binds communities together.
