The England cricket team attained several feats in their win over South Africa in the 3rd and final ODI at the Rose Bowl, Southampton, on September 8. One massive record England made was they ended up amassing their highest team total against South Africa in ODI cricket, as per ESPNcricinfo. England smashed 414 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 50 overs. This was their maiden score of 400-plus against the Proteas. It was also England’s 7th score of 400-plus in ODIs.
In response, England bowled South Africa out for 72. This is the Proteas’ 2nd-lowest score in ODIs and their lowest against England. The Three Lions also clocked their biggest ODI win (by runs).
England hammer their maiden 400-plus total against South Africa
The tone was set by England openers Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett, who added 59 runs inside nine overs. After Duckett perished for 31, Smith and Joe Root stitched a 58-run stand. What followed was a majestic 182-run partnership for the 3rd wicket between Root and Jacob Bethell.
The latter perished for 110 off 82 balls. He hit 13 fours and three sixes. The hosts were 299/3 and then lost Harry Brook (302/4). Root continued to bat on and with Jos Buttler (62*), they added 69 runs.
Root slammed his 19th hundred in ODIs, scoring 100 from 96 balls (4s: 6). Buttler and Will Jacks then ensured their side went past 400.
For South Africa, Nandre Burger proved to be expensive, conceding 95 runs from his 10 overs. Burger bowled South Africa’s joint second-most expensive ODI spell, equalling Wayne Parnell (2/95).
