Gujrat : India started the 30th Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship on a high note by winning two gold medals on the opening day held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu made a triumphant return by winning the gold in the women’s 48kg category with a total lift of 193kg, comprising 84kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk. This victory also secured her direct qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Despite a shaky start, Mirabai set new championship records and expressed confidence as she prepares for the World Championships in October.
Alongside Mirabai, youth lifters Preetismita Bhoi and Dharmajyoti Dewgharia also made impressive performances. Preetismita claimed gold in the women’s 44kg youth category with a total of 150kg, breaking youth Commonwealth records, while Dharmajyoti lifted a combined 224kg in the men’s 56kg youth category, setting new youth records as well.
The championships feature around 300 athletes from 31 Commonwealth nations and serve as a qualifying event for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. India’s 16-member senior squad, led by Mirabai Chanu, displayed strong promise on the opening day, setting the stage for an exciting competition ahead.
