Australia suffered a defeat in the 2nd ODI against South Africa in their 2025 home series. The match held at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, saw South Africa score 277 in 49.1 overs on August 22. Chasing a target of 278, Australia were bundled out for a score of 193 in just 37.4 overs. Australia lost the contest by 84 runs. This was South Africa’s 2nd-biggest win over Australia in Australia (ODIs).
Notably, Australia surrendered the series and are trailing the Proteas 2-0. This was South Africa’s 5th consecutive ODI series win against the Aussies. On the other hand, Australia have now suffered three straight bilateral series losses. They lost to Pakistan and Sri Lanka before this.
Interestingly, the first ODI of the ongoing series saw South Africa register their biggest win over Australia in Australia. The visitors won that match by a staggering 98 runs in Cairns. Australia perished for 198 in chase of 297 runs. And now, they have posted the 2nd-biggest win by 84 runs as mentioned above. South Africa saw Keshav Maharaj and Lungi Ngidi deflate Australia in these two ODIs.
The other instance of South Africa beating Australia by 80-plus runs was back in 1994 at the WACA in Perth. In that match, SA were restricted to 208/7 in 50 overs before Australia were bowled out for 126 in 41 overs.
