Parvej Khan: From Haryana Farmlands to Six-Year Doping Ban

Haryana : Parvej Khan, a promising Indian middle-distance runner originally from the small village of Chahalka in Nuh district, Haryana, has been handed a six-year ban for doping violations that has cast a shadow over his rising career.

Born on December 26, 2004, Parvej grew up in a farming family, the son of Nafees Ali, who cultivated wheat and fodder on a modest five-acre plot of land. Driven by a natural talent for running that became evident in his early teens, Parvej initially ran to prepare for army recruitment. His raw speed allowed him to outperform older competitors from a young age. At 13, he moved to New Delhi to train at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and later at the Sports Authority of India in Bhopal under coach Anupama Srivastava, seeking better training opportunities.

Parvej’s rise was meteoric: he won gold at U-16 nationals, medaled at Khelo India Youth Games, and clinched gold in the 1500m at the 2022 Indian National Games with a time of 3:40.89. His achievements earned him a scholarship to the University of Florida, where he made history as the first Indian track athlete to compete at the NCAA Championships and secured titles like the 2024 SEC Indoor Mile Championship.

However, in August 2025, Parvej Khan faced a major setback as the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) issued a six-year ban based on findings of erythropoietin (EPO) use and multiple missed doping tests in 2023 and 2024. This ban nullifies all his results from June 27, 2024, onward, including his gold medal in the 1500m at the 63rd National Inter-State Senior Athletics Meet.

Parvej’s trajectory—from running barefoot on farmlands to winning medals on international stages—had captivated many as the story of a young athlete breaking barriers. Now, the six-year suspension threatens to derail what was seen as a bright future, sidelining him during crucial years of his athletic prime.

While his achievements in U.S. collegiate athletics and Indian national meets showcased his potential to reach Olympic levels, the doping ban serves as a stark reminder of the strict regulations governing sportsmanship.

Parvej Khan’s story is thus a mix of inspiring ascent and cautionary tale, reflecting both the promise and pitfalls faced by young athletes on the global stage. The running community and fans now watch to see how he will respond to this challenge, and what his future holds beyond the ban.
