India on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, with Harmanpreet Kaur set to lead the side and Smriti Mandhana named vice-captain. The tournament begins on September 30 with India opening against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.
The biggest talking point was the omission of opener Shafali Verma, while pace spearhead Renuka Singh Thakur made her comeback after recovering from a long injury layoff.
Amanjot Kaur steps in
With Pooja Vastrakar unavailable due to a stress injury, the selectors turned to allrounder Amanjot Kaur, who impressed during the England tour. Apart from her seam bowling, Amanjot had played a crucial match-winning knock of 63* in the T20I series.
India’s preparation
The Women in Blue enter the World Cup high on confidence after clinching a tri-series in Sri Lanka and recording a historic series victory in England. They will aim to go one better than 2017, when they narrowly lost the final to England at Lord’s.
