Boston, MA – The Boston Celtics announced on Friday that head coach Joe Mazzulla has signed a multi-year contract extension. While the specific terms, including the length and monetary value of the deal, were not disclosed, the extension solidifies Mazzulla’s position at the helm of the reigning NBA champions.
A Rapid Rise to Championship Glory
At 37 years old, Mazzulla has quickly established a formidable coaching record with the Celtics. In just three seasons, he has led the team to an impressive 182-64 regular-season record and a 33-17 playoff mark. His tenure culminated in the Boston Celtics winning the NBA title in 2024, marking the franchise’s 18th championship.
This achievement made Mazzulla the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since the 1968-69 season, when legendary Bill Russell, then 35, guided the Celtics to a championship as a player-coach. A Rhode Island native, Mazzulla spent three seasons as a Celtics assistant coach before taking on the head role.
Mazzulla Expresses Gratitude Amidst Roster Changes
In a statement released via Sky Sports, Mazzulla expressed his profound gratitude: “This is truly a blessing. I would not be here without my faith, my wife and my children. We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad’s mentorship and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston.”
The upcoming 2025-26 NBA season is expected to bring a “new-look” Celtics squad. Star forward Jayson Tatum is currently recovering from an Achilles injury sustained in the playoffs and could potentially miss the entire campaign. Additionally, the Celtics have traded away veteran players Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis and are not expected to bring back Al Horford, signaling a significant roster overhaul as Mazzulla prepares to lead the team into its next chapter.
