Thursday night’s CFL clash between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and B.C. Lions is officially sold out, with fans packing Tim Hortons Field for a double celebration honouring two hometown legends — NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Canadian football icon Miles Gorrell.
This Week 10 matchup has sparked excitement across Hamilton, thanks to the emotional connection the city shares with both sports figures. The team announced that all standard tickets have been sold, with only limited end-zone social tickets briefly made available to meet overwhelming demand.
Shai Rally Day: A Champion Returns
Reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be celebrated as part of “Shai Rally Day.” The Hamilton-born guard recently led the Oklahoma City Thunder to their first-ever NBA championship, earning Finals MVP honours. He wrapped up his sixth NBA season with eye-popping averages: 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, 5 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1 block per game.
Shai’s homecoming is especially meaningful for the local community, which takes immense pride in his rapid rise from Canadian courts to global superstardom.
Wall of Honour Induction for Gorrell
The Tiger-Cats will also induct offensive lineman Miles Gorrell into their Wall of Honour. Gorrell, who played eight seasons in Hamilton over a 19-year CFL career, was a two-time East Division top lineman and earned All-CFL recognition in 1989. He played a vital role in the team’s success during the 1980s, including the 1986 Grey Cup triumph.
Crowd Roars Despite Weekday Kickoff
The sellout is notable as Hamilton hasn’t always packed the stadium outside of the annual Labour Day Classic. The Ticats have averaged 22,211 fans per home game this season, but this game breaks the trend. Former NFL player and TSN commentator Luke Willson had previously criticized the lack of full houses — a bet he made online means he’ll now auction a signed Seahawks jersey to benefit CFL Fans Fight Cancer.
Red-Hot Ticats Face Struggling B.C.
The Tiger-Cats (6-2) enter the contest on a six-game win streak, making them one of the hottest teams in the league. Their opponents, the B.C. Lions (3-5), hope to spoil the celebration despite being out of form.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. EDT with temperatures expected to hit 28°C. The game will be televised on TSN and RDS in Canada, CBS Sports Network in the U.S., and streamed on CFL+ for international viewers. Radio coverage will be available via 730 CKNW in Vancouver and the Ticats Audio Network in Hamilton.
