India overcame defensive lapses to edge out China 4-3 in a thrilling Pool A opener at the Asia Cup men’s hockey tournament in Rajgir on Friday. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh struck a superb hat-trick, ensuring the hosts began their campaign with full points despite a nervy finish.
India Survive Early Scare
China stunned the home crowd by drawing first blood through Du Shihao in the 12th minute. India replied quickly when Jugraj Singh levelled with a powerful drag flick in the 18th minute. Just two minutes later, Harmanpreet converted his first penalty corner to tilt momentum in India’s favour.
China Fight Back
The visitors refused to give in easily. Even after Harmanpreet’s second strike in the 33rd minute, goals from Chen Benhai (35’) and Gao Jiesheng (42’) exposed India’s defensive vulnerabilities, especially in goalkeeping and marking.
Captain’s Decisive Touch
With the score locked at 3-3, Harmanpreet once again stepped up, smashing home his third penalty corner in the 47th minute to restore India’s advantage. A late green card left India playing with 10 men, but they held on under intense Chinese pressure.
Strong Start, Tough Tests Ahead
The narrow win gave India the perfect start in Pool A. However, the backline’s inconsistency remains a concern as tougher challenges await in the coming matches.
