Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has formally expressed his desire to leave the franchise ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season, putting one of the biggest Indian names on the potential trade or auction radar. With both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) interested, the franchise now faces a tricky decision.
Royals’ Dilemma: Release, Trade or Retain?
Samson, who has been the face of the Royals since 2013 and their captain since 2022, is currently under contract until 2027, having been retained at ₹18 crore before the IPL 2025 auction. As per IPL regulations, Rajasthan hold the final say over his future — they can refuse to release him, forcing the player to stay.
However, internal differences have reportedly strained the relationship. Unless resolved, the situation could escalate to Samson entering the 2026 IPL auction — a high-profile and costly scenario for all parties.
CSK Move Blocked by Trade Conditions
Samson reportedly held a meeting with CSK management and head coach Stephen Fleming during the Major League Cricket season in the US, expressing interest in a move to Chennai. But trade negotiations have hit a roadblock.
Rajasthan are open to a player swap deal, asking for two players from CSK. However, Chennai are unwilling to trade players and prefer an all-cash transfer, similar to their 2021 deal for Robin Uthappa. This difference in trade approach has stalled progress.
KKR Also in the Mix
KKR, who currently lack a frontline Indian wicketkeeper, have also shown interest in Samson. The Kerala batter was briefly with the franchise in 2012 but never made an appearance. While KKR are known for aggressive moves in the trade window, Samson reportedly prefers a move to CSK, especially with the Chennai franchise looking for a long-term successor to MS Dhoni, now 44.
Rajasthan Considering Options
Releasing Samson would allow Rajasthan to open up budget space and restructure their top-heavy squad. With Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi as top-order options, and Dhruv Jurel available as a wicketkeeper, the Royals may consider it. However, letting go of a marquee player won’t be an easy call.
Franchise insiders say Rajasthan have received trade offers but none deemed acceptable yet.
What’s Next?
If no agreement is reached between RR and CSK, Samson entering the 2026 auction pool is likely. CSK would then need to release players to free up funds, setting up a high-stakes bidding war.
Either way, Sanju Samson’s future is set to dominate headlines in the IPL off-season.
