German Olympic gold medallist Laura Dahlmeier has died following a tragic mountaineering accident on Laila Peak in northern Pakistan.
Dahlmeier, 31, was struck by a rockfall on July 28 while climbing with partner Marina Eva Krauss at approximately 5,700 meters. Krauss survived the incident and raised the alarm, but poor weather prevented immediate rescue efforts.
Ground teams, including elite climbers from the U.S. and Germany, were deployed after helicopters were grounded due to rain, wind, and low visibility. Despite efforts, Dahlmeier’s body has not been recovered, and authorities say her prior wishes—to not risk others’ lives for a rescue—will be respected.
Known for her dominance in biathlon, Dahlmeier won two golds and a bronze at the 2018 Winter Olympics, and retired in 2019 to focus on environmental work and mountaineering. She had recently summited Great Trango Tower in the same region.
Dahlmeier’s death has sparked widespread mourning in Germany and across the global sports community. Tributes continue to pour in for the celebrated athlete and passionate mountaineer.
