Bhubaneswar : India’s young mathematicians made the nation proud at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025, held in Sunshine Coast, Australia. Facing off against 630 participants from 110 countries, the Indian team delivered its best performance to date—winning three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal, and securing a historic 7th place in the world rankings.
Historic Results
The six-member Indian contingent set a national record with a collective score of 193 out of 252, the highest ever achieved by India since it first participated in 1989. This achievement matches India’s previous best rank of 7, last reached in 1998 and 2001.
Meet the Medalists
The winning team included:
Kanav Talwar (Gold)
Aarav Gupta (Gold)
Adhitya Mangudy (Gold)
Abel George Mathew (Silver)
Aadish Jain (Silver)
Archit Manas (Bronze)
Notably, four of the six medalists hail from Delhi, while Adhitya Mangudy represented Maharashtra.
India’s Rising Stature in Mathematics
This is only the second time in India’s IMO history that three gold medals have been won in a single year, the last being in 1998. With nine golds in just the past three competitions (2023-2025), the nation’s progress and investment in math education and talent development is evident.
The Olympiad Challenge
The IMO features six highly challenging problems that test students across algebra, combinatorics, number theory, and geometry, over two grueling days. Each contestant can score a maximum of 42 points, making each mark hard-earned and every medal significant.
What Makes the Victory Special
India’s achievements at the IMO are coordinated by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), which manages rigorous national selection and training. Under the leadership of Prof. Shanta Laishram (Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi) and Deputy Leader Dr. Mainak Ghosh (ISI Bengaluru), this year’s delegation has raised the bar for all future competitors.
India’s consistent rise in the world rankings and its record medal haul this year are testaments to the nation’s growing prowess in the field of mathematics—and an inspiration for students across the country to aim high and dream big.
