Bhubaneswar : Former Indian men’s hockey captain and legendary goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh has called the team’s disappointing run in the recent FIH Pro League a “very good wake-up call” as India prepares for the crucial Asian Games and 2026 World Cup. India finished eighth out of nine teams in the Pro League’s European stage, narrowly avoiding relegation after seven consecutive losses.
Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Sreejesh noted that while the team created many opportunities and showed strong preparation, the results were not in their favor. “We gave a very good fight on the field but sometimes the result went against us. The preparation was perfect, but coaches now have enough time to make the team ready for the Asia Cup, Asian Games, and the World Cup,” Sreejesh said. He stressed that the Pro League’s outcome underscores the need for India to stay alert and address its vulnerabilities ahead of these all-important tournaments.
The 2026 Asian Games will be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4, and the World Cup will take place in the Netherlands and Belgium from August 15 to 30.
Sreejesh, who played key roles in India’s Olympic bronze medal wins in Tokyo and Paris, believes this wake-up call will drive the national team to sharpen their preparation and focus as they set their sights on redemption at the continental and global stages.
