Patrick Reed ended a 41-start winless drought on the LIV Golf series by triumphing in a four-man playoff at LIV Golf Dallas on Sunday. The 2018 Masters champion secured his victory with a birdie on the first extra hole at Maridoe Golf Club.
Reed, 34, initially held a commanding five-stroke lead early in the final round. However, he squandered this advantage, carding five bogeys on the front nine before steadying himself with pars through the back nine to even make the playoff. His winning birdie on the 18th hole was only his third of the day on that particular hole.
Playoff Drama and Noteworthy Performances
Reed, England’s Paul Casey, South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen, and Japan’s Jinichiro Kozuma all finished the 54-hole regulation play tied at six-under 282. Kozuma, in particular, missed an opportunity to capture his first international title.
Sharing fifth place at 283 were Americans Charles Howell and Harold Varner, England’s Tyrrell Hatton, and Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin.
Team Victory and Open Qualification
In the team competition, The Crushers, featuring Paul Casey and two-time US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau, clinched the team title.
Additionally, Spain’s Sergio Garcia secured a spot in next month’s British Open at Portrush. He qualified by being one of the top-five LIV season players not already exempt for the major championship.
