Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh continued her incredible form at the national trials on Monday, smashing the long-standing world record in the women’s 200m individual medley with a stunning time of 2:05.70.
The 18-year-old broke the previous record of 2:06.12 set by Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu back in 2015, becoming the first woman ever to go under the 2:06 mark.
This was McIntosh’s second world record of the meet—she had already rewritten the record books in the 400m freestyle on Saturday. She also made waves on Sunday with a dominant win in the 800m freestyle, clocking the third-fastest time in history in a race that’s not even her specialty.
In the 200m medley, McIntosh set herself up with near-perfect opening legs in the butterfly and backstroke. She followed it with a noticeably improved breaststroke leg—often considered her weakest stroke—which kept her on record pace. She then unleashed a powerful freestyle finish to completely demolish Hosszu’s previous best.
Mary-Sophie Harvey finished second in 2:08.78, and Ashley McMillan took third with a time of 2:12.08.
McIntosh’s performances at these trials continue to cement her status as one of swimming’s brightest stars.
