Rayan Cherki is the latest prodigy to emerge from Lyon’s famed academy, and many believe he might just be the best of the lot.
A Star in the Making
Cherki joined Lyon as a seven-year-old and made history at 16 years and 140 days, becoming the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer in a French Cup match in January 2020. Just months earlier, he had debuted in the Champions League against Zenit.
The young playmaker also made waves on the international stage, helping France reach the U21 European Championship quarterfinals in 2023 and finishing runners-up at the 2024 Olympics.
Admired by Legends
From a young age, Cherki caught the eye of Europe’s elite, including Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United. A self-declared Cristiano Ronaldo fan, he dreams of playing for Real one day — but for now, Manchester City has won the race.
France great Thierry Henry once said he had “never seen anyone dribble as fast,” while Alexandre Lacazette called him “special,” adding that with time, Cherki could reach Mesut Özil’s level. Ainsley Maitland-Niles even described him as “the best natural talent” he’s ever seen — a true “wizard with the ball.”
Breakout Season
Cherki just completed his best season yet in Ligue 1 — 12 goals, 11 assists, 22 big chances created, 13 through balls, and 48 successful dribbles. His intelligence and off-the-ball movement have also matured significantly.
One stat that stands out: he’s ambidextrous. Of the 44 shots he took last season, exactly half came from each foot. He even takes corners with both, depending on the side.
Big Impact on International Debut
Cherki’s reputation soared even higher after a stunning international debut against Spain, where he helped France rally from 1-5 down. Days later, he earned his full debut in a 2-0 win over Germany in the Nations League.
Fitting into Pep’s Plans
With Kevin De Bruyne’s departure, Manchester City are rebuilding. A £46.3m deal for Tijjani Reijnders and a £31m signing of Rayan Ait-Nouri show City’s intent. Cherki, meanwhile, is expected to fill an advanced midfield role behind Erling Haaland or slot in on the right wing — especially with Jeremy Doku and Savinho inconsistent, and Jack Grealish possibly on his way out.
While Guardiola typically favors controlled, possession-based play, Cherki’s creativity and flair could add a fresh dimension — just when City need it.
A New Chapter Begins
From lighting up Ligue 1 to dazzling on the international stage, and now joining Manchester City — the 20-year-old’s rise has been swift. But despite all the hype, Cherki remains grounded. His journey is only just beginning.
